STAR at My Local with activerochford
(Supporting Talented Athletes in Rochford)
The Rochford District Council Leisure Team, Shop at My Local and activerochford are working in partnership to support our local athletes. We have many talented athletes in the District already competing on the international stage, who need additional support to continue competing at the highest level.
Local businesses that are part of the Shop at My Local scheme are now being given the opportunity to support and sponsor two very special athletes; Lucy Hodges and Rebecca Terry (Biographies attached). activerochford, the Community Activity Network for the Rochford District, has kick started the sponsorship by becoming a Gold sponsor with £1000. We are now inviting local businesses to join STAR at My Local as Silver or Bronze sponsors (sponsorship runs from April 2011 to March 2012). Sponsorship packages for this unique opportunity are attached.

Sporting Achievements during 2010
– Gold at the 2010 Blind Nationals in the B2 sight classification
– Gold at the 2010 IFDS Blind Match Racing International Championships
– Gold at the 2010 RYA Multi Class Regatta in both the fleet racing and pursuit racing
– 7th at the SKUD IFDS World Championships for Paralympic Classes
– 2nd place in the Regional Master Swimming Championships age groups B, with personal medals from Gold to Bronze across 8 events
– Rochford District Sports Personality of the Year (see photo)
Plans and Ambitions For 2011
– To represent GBR in the IFDS Blind Match Racing Championships, which is a test event for the 2016 Paralympics and gain a top three position
– To train regularly at Match Racing in order to compete for GBR
– To compete in the B2 sight classification in the Blind Nationals and achieve a top two position
– To compete in the RYA Multi Class Regatta in the mixed disabled category
Sporting Achievements during 2010
– Youngest ever winner of the Colchester & East Essex adult tournament
– Part of the Essex team in the U17 Nottingham ICT
– Won Essex U17 restricted girls singles and doubles
– Winner U17 Anglia Silver tournament in doubles and runner up for singles
– Part of the winning Essex team competing in the U16 Eastern Region
– One of the youngest players to represent Essex at senior level
– Rochford District and Essex Young Sports Personality of the Year (see photo)
Plans and Ambitions For 2011
– Retain U17 girls singles and doubles title
– Have success in the U17 Nationals
– Be part of the Essex team in Nottingham ICT
– Compete in an international tournament
– Have success in the senior Essex League
Special presentation at Rochford District Sports Awards
A special presentation was made at the Rochford District Sports Awards attended by the STAR sponsors, Lucy and Rebecca. Ben Fryer from BBC Essex told the near 200 in attendance more about the scheme and Lucy explained just how much the funding meant to both her and Rebecca. A raffle on the night raised £152 bringing the total funding raised to date to £2012.

STaR is a local Sports Injury Clinic, established in 2001 in order to meet the needs of athletes of all abilities, in and around the Rochford district.
